Nailed it!

Over the last few days we have had a crazy time in the shop. I tried feebly to explain how much like a scripted performance bending in ribs is but reading back i can tell i did not stick the landing. Now that the smoke has cleared lets have a look at what's going on.

The way Ben designed and we lofted/constructed these boats there needs to be a little wedgeamegigger under the frames so the garbord plank lands on a good footing. This also creates a opportune time to tune up the rabbet to except the plank.  One may think this is fun and games but its slow tedious work, just look at the joy in Ben's face.

Meanwhile next door I was crawling around bolting and screwing the frames to the clamp and thwart riser. Also tedious, but at least, well at least we are all in this together.

So now that the week is over were so close to planking you can almost feel it. If all goes well the planking stock will arrive next week and we can get going.

I hope to get some things done on the IRH tomorrow.

It all happened just like the intronet said.

Busy days in the shop. First off this guy shows up, who is this guy and what is he up to? a book or something. Everyone is up to something (what are you up to?).

The last two days have seen a crowd. Everyone wants in on the steam box show, students, Mothra, reporters, etc. Thing two is being ribbed out by this mob.  Two days have turned into performance art, things to do no time, no time.

Have you ever watched pots get fired, a iron pour?

Boat building is similar. Its one big dance. But like anything sometimes improvisation is where the beauty happens.

Bla, Bla, Bla....
Here are the pics for the last few days.

N'ough  said.

Ponder on it?

Something to ponder....

 Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When i put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When i have crost the bar.

Sometimes a poem can take you back to someplace you thought you could never get to again. Thanks internet, ass.

Photo Commentary

While working on a boat the mind has a chance to wander. I was thinking about river trips, (hopefully soon to come) wondering where to find a used drift boat trailer, and whether or not Flo is a drift boat or river dory, and what the hell the IRH is for that matter when i noticed...

Life was imitating TV right in front of me, if i didn't stop to look around it may pass me by. So here is photo commentary, Powell boats 2-11-13.

These little beauties will be canted frames. The hole in the middle lets them flex easier in that axis. Sort of hard to explain. You'll see it better when the boats are flipped over, before the decking other wise to see this your going spelunking.

AAAAARG!!! Stuck in the cage!!

Lots o' pictures of the hull taking shape. Clamps and the like... Anyhoo with the ribs on it really is beginning to look sweet.

Out.

The Shoperage

Saturday Flo came out of the garage and under cover to clear room for the IRH build. Mean while in the house a wicked staring match was commencing.  I'm not going to say who won but if you look deep into Olive's eyes, well....

With the garage empty i set up the frames to see what space i have to work with. Gonna be tight.

Got up today and was off to the shop to build a strong back. Turned out to be real straight forward.

 First mold on.
 Checking for plumb-ey goodness.
 Ahhh, there it is.
The shoperage is a little tight. but she defiantly fits.

Its super nice to have a project going again.
